چکیده

Many astrophysical objects (e.g., spiral galaxies, the solar system, Saturn’s rings, and luminous disks around compact objects) occur in the form of a disk. One of the important astrophysical problems is to understand how rotationally supported disks lose angular momentum, and accrete towards the bottom of the gravitational potential, converting gravitational energy into thermal (and radiation) energy. The magnetorotational instability (MRI), an instability causing turbulent transport in ionized accretion disks, is studied in the kinetic regime. Kinetic effects are important because radiatively inefficient accretion flows (RIAFs), like the one around the supermassive black hole in the center of our Galaxy, are collisionless. The ion Larmor radius is tiny compared to the scale of MHD turbulence so that the drift kinetic equation (DKE), obtained by averaging the Vlasov equation over the fast gyromotion, is appropriate for evolving the distribution function. The kinetic MHD formalism, based on the moments of the DKE, is used for linear and nonlinear studies. A Landau fluid closure for parallel heat flux, which models kinetic effects like collisionless damping, is used to close the moment hierarchy. We show that the kinetic MHD and drift kinetic formalisms give the same set of linear modes for a Keplerian disk. The BGK collision operator is used to study the transition of the MRI from kinetic to the MHD regime. The ZEUS MHD code

Shearing Box Simulations of the Mri in a Collisionless Plasma

We describe local shearing box simulations of turbulence driven by the magnetorotational instability (MRI) in a collisionless plasma. Collisionless effects may be important in radiatively inefficient accretion flows, such as near the black hole in the Galactic Center. The MHD version of ZEUS is modified to evolve an anisotropic pressure tensor. A fluid closure approximation is used to calculate...

Quasi-periodic Oscillations from Magnetorotational Turbulence

Quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) in the X-ray lightcurves of accreting neutron star and black hole binaries have been widely interpreted as being due to standing wave modes in accretion disks. These disks are thought to be highly turbulent due to the magnetorotational instability (MRI). We study wave excitation by MRI turbulence in the shearing box geometry. We demonstrate that axisymmetric s...

Magnetically Driven Accretion Flows in the Kerr Metric I: Models and Overall Structure

This is the first in a series of papers that investigate the properties of accretion flows in the Kerr metric through three-dimensional, general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations of tori with a near-Keplerian initial angular velocity profile. We study four models with increasing black hole spin, from a/M = 0 to 0.998, for which the structural parameters of the initial tori are mainta...

The Magnetorotational Instability in the Kerr Metric

The magnetorotational instability (MRI) is the leading candidate for driving turbulence, angular momentum transport, and accretion in astrophysical disks. I consider the linear theory of the MRI in a thin, equatorial disk in the Kerr metric. I begin by analyzing a mechanical model for the MRI that consists of two point masses on nearly circular orbits connected by a spring. I then develop a loc...

Magnetorotational Turbulence and Dynamo in a Collisionless Plasma.

We present results from the first 3D kinetic numerical simulation of magnetorotational turbulence and dynamo, using the local shearing-box model of a collisionless accretion disk. The kinetic magnetorotational instability grows from a subthermal magnetic field having zero net flux over the computational domain to generate self-sustained turbulence and outward angular-momentum transport. Signifi...
